Travel Must See: The Palais Garnier, Paris

Who would have thought my first visit to an Opera House would trigger an instant love? During our trip to Paris I saw a promotional advertisement for an Opera House in Paris which showcased rows of chandeliers. I, of course, immediately turned to my ‘new’ fiance and asked if there was room on the agenda to go, and indeed there was! Today’s “Travel Must See” takes us across the pond to one of my favorite places on Earth.

The Palias Garnier is regarded as one of the most famous opera houses in the world and just by stepping in the front entrance you can see why. Grand marble staircases, works of art on the ceiling, multi level entry ways, and detail in every turn. Every step taken around the building leads your eye to incredible details. Looking at the photos you are probably thinking it already looks familiar, even if you have never visited. And, you would be right. The Paris Opera House made it’s true rise to fame after being featured as the setting for the popular “Phantom of the Opera”. Remember the chandelier that comes crashing down to center stage? The real one is hanging in the middle of the 1900 horseshoe shaped auditorium and weighs 7 tons. That is 7 tons of gorgeous, friends! It’s as beautiful as it sounds and despite my efforts to convince Opera House workers to let me take it home and hang it in my living room, it is still there for you to see.
As you walk around the multi level foyer, you’ll see costumes from iconic opera performances on display. These hand made beauties sparkled with crystals from across the balconies. The Opera House also houses a museum, impeccable interior design and history as rich as the velvet seating. I easily could have spent all day here, and at one point chose to sit on the marble stairs just to appreciate all of the beauty and history that made this place so unique.

Upon leaving the fiancé and I agreed that a new bucket list item for us is to see a live Opera in a historic Opera house somewhere around the world. We are still deciding where that somewhere will be, but I can hardly wait for the experience.

Travel Must See: The Golden Gate Bridge

California is not only a place I’ve called home, but there’s a certain magic to this West Coast favorite. From the coast lines that run the entire state, to giant Redwood forests, California is the perfect place to getaway.

This is the first of a new series you can find on my site, called “Travel Must See”. I will bring you along with me on my journey from iconic places to local hotspots and everything in between. You may have visited some of the places I will feature, or perhaps you’ve only admired them on Instagram, but there is ALWAYS something to discover, and I hope to show you new sites and sounds of each destination, even for the seasoned travel pros.

So what is first up in this series? Let’s start with one of my personal faves, The Golden Gate Bridge. This tourist destination is on many people’s bucket list, but it made my “Travel Must See” list for some many reasons!
Here are just a few:

* It is one of the most recognizable tourist attractions in the world! In other words, it will look good on your Insta page.
* Have you ever taken a ferry? It’s an experience you should have at least once. If you haven’t, this is the perfect place to do it!
* The bridge offers the perfect setting to hike and explore. Embrace the outdoorsy person in you; you can thank me later.
* Where else can you go and pay a toll fee ($7) with things like shoes, canes, and even false teeth if you forget your money?! (Totally true).
* It’s one of the most beautiful views you will ever see. Architectural and landscape, it’s a two-fer!

I could go on and on as to why this is one of my favorite places to visit each time I make it up to San Francisco, but I want you see it for yourself! Be sure to tag your photos in the comments and tell me about your trip!

Family Fun for Everyone

Basically, you can never go wrong with me and animals. Unless we’re talking about reptiles and snakes, and then you might be able to count me out. But, anyone who knows me well can tell you that I will give anything to feed things like little piggies, wild monkeys, sweet dolphins, and more. My fiance jokes that my favorite part of our Hawaii trip was feeding a group of wild chickens and roosters on the Road to Hana…and, he was right.

So, it is no surprise that while on a drive down to Tucson, Arizona, I absolutely HAD to stop at the Rooster Cogburn Ostrich Ranch, located in Picacho, Arizona. YOU. GUYS. It is the best $7 I have ever spent.

Here are a few of the fun things you can enjoying doing for about the same cost as your favorite Starbucks beverage:

* Feed eager donkeys who love to nip or gently kiss at your clothes as you walk by. These sweet guys gently take the feed right of your hand, and slobber all over you while doing it. It’s actually pretty adorable, they even take turns! This was by far my favorite group to feed, I even went back to them with a second helping.

* Feed sweet deer. These little ones crowd together and are anxious to take the feed right into their mouths. They don’t bite, but they were a little more aggressive than the donkeys when it came to eating.

* Feed adorable, but freaky goats. Am I the only one who thinks goats are scary looking? Don’t let their look scare you. These sweet ones make kissy faces every time they want food. And, although I was temped to stick my lips out, the thought of what they’ve been eating all day with no one to clean their face kept me far away.

* Ostrich Feeding. Okay, so this wasn’t my favorite. Why? BECAUSE THEY BIT ME. I know, you are going to tell me that Ostriches can bite, and I realize that, but these little guys are sneaky, and hungry! While standing a few feet away from the fence, one of these big birds extended his neck and took a snap right at my arm. I screamed, people stared, and I decided I was done with this part of my adventure.

* Ducks and Lorikeet feeding. Included in your $7 admission is a token for duck food and a container that contains sweet nectar. A diagram shows you how to properly feed the ducks, and you enter a giant enclosure which houses the Lorikeets. These beautiful, colorful birds, land on your hand and eat right out of the cup. Fun, even for a big kid like me.

So if you’ve already traveled to Disneyland and Mount Everest and you are looking for a family filled acitivty that you have not done before and won’t break the bank, this cost effective, TOTALLY FUN, ranch should be on your travel list this summer. You can get more details on hours of operation and fun facts HERE.

Just don’t turn your back on the Ostrich.
